Our love of fermentation started with beer and it was this last January, while making our latest batch of home-brew (a Porter), that the idea of blogging about the science experiments in our kitchen grew (pun intended). Here Zannah and Chris are saving every last drop of malt, which they then added to the wort on the stovetop.
The Porter was patient, even as we made it sit in the kitchen corner longer than intended. It grew and bubbled, first in a plastic 5 gal bucket, then longer in a 5 gal glass carboy, and on the day of bottling we fed it a bit more sugar so that the yeast had one last hurah, creating the CO2 that gives the beer it's carbonation/head. Finally, after sitting in bottles for 3 weeks, we thought it was only fitting that the first taste be made on Zannah Porter's birthday! And what a fine debut it was.
