Our band organized our first kitchen junket last week when temps hit the mid 80's! "A kitchen junket is a dance party held in the largest room in a private home. Traditionally the kitchen was the largest room in old New England farm houses so that is where the dancing was done." Since two of my band mates live in a spacious house with a full living room and dining room with wood floors we moved all of the furniture out and filled up the space with 12-14 dancers and 6 band members. The kitchen was reserved for snacks and mingling:) Junkets are rare nowadays, but we love the idea of hosting a private event in order to make contra music and dancing more accessible to our friends. Plus, playing music for a whole dance is a workout, so we treated this like a good training opportunity. We encouraged anyone to play music with us and to call the dances, and we got a few friends to dance that normally don't, so it was a huge success. To my delight the next junket is already being planned for May!
